Conversation with the author, Shida Bazyar

Four members of a family, four decades, four unforgettable voices. In her novel Nachts ist es leise in Teheran, Shida Bazyar tells the disturbing and touching story of an Iranian-German family that begins in Tehran in 1979 and carries on right into present-day Germany. It starts with Behsad, a young left-wing revolutionary who finds the love of his life in the courageous, literature-obsessed Nahid. Then their flight following the mullahs’ seizure of power, and the story of their children, Laleh, Mo and Tara, who grow up in Germany under the influence of two different worlds. This is a moving novel about revolution, oppression, resistance, and an uncompromising desire for freedom.

Shida Bazyar’s second novel, Drei Kameradinnen, offers a complex panoramic view of the realities of Germany through the depiction of a whole range of different modes of life, thus giving an unsparing insight into the tensions and horrors of our contemporary world. Three friends, Kasih, Hani and Saya, constitute the heart of the book. These three young women and their parents come from different parts of the world, but having grown up together in a socially explosive environment they are united in deep friendship. Shida Bazyar shows with absolute clarity what it means to be challenged simply on the basis of one’s origins, but also how violence, exclusion and ignorance can be faced down through solidarity. Drei Kameradinnen is a combative and entertaining book that takes us to the very heart of current debates and delivers a rebuke to us all.
