Katerina Poladjan: Zukunftsmusik [Dreams of a better future]

Four generations of females, a kommunalka (a communal apartment), and the end of an era. In Siberia, thousands of kilometres east of Moscow, a grandmother, mother, daughter and granddaughter all live together in a space that is not only extremely tight but in an advanced state of decay. Everyone goes about their business: the engineer next door tries to organise his life into pigeon-holes, Warwara helps to deliver a baby, Maria dreams of love, Janka wants to sing in the kitchen come the evening. It is 11 March 1985, the day Gorbachev seized power. Four lives at a critical turning point, though none of them realise it.
The novel Zukunftsmusik was published by the S. Fischer Verlag in 2022. With the assistance of the litrix.de Translation Support Programme, which from 2022 to 2024 is geared to Italian, the book was published on 19 September 2023 by SEM Libri as La musica del futuro in an Italian translation by Enrico Arosio. Its author, Katerina Poladjan, is embarking on a reading tour with the Italian edition of her novel, and is presenting it first in Naples, and then in Cagliari within the context of Marina Café Noir – Festival of Applied Literatures, Milan, Genoa and Rome.
Katerina Poladjan was born in Moscow, grew up in Rome and Vienna, and now lives in Germany. She writes plays and essays; her debut novel In einer Nacht, woanders ('One night, somewhere else') was followed by Vielleicht Marseille ('Perhaps Marseilles'), and together with Henning Fritsch she wrote the literary travelogue Hinter Sibirien ('Beyond Siberia'). She was nominated for the Alfred Döblin Prize and the European Prize for Literature, and she was a participant in the 2015 Klagenfurt German-language Literature Festival. Her novel Hier sind Löwen ('There are lions here') won her financial support from the German Literature Fund, the Berlin Senate, and the Tarabya Cultural Academy in Istanbul. In 2021 she was awarded the Nelly Sachs Prize of the City of Dortmund. Her novel Zukunftsmusik won her a place on the shortlist for the 2022 Leipzig Book Fair Prize, and was awarded the 2022 Rheingau Literature Prize.
